Shadows of the Tide
Recommended Storyline:
The Wizard's Study:
Setting: A dusty, cluttered study filled with mysterious tomes, glowing artifacts, and the faint scent of aged paper and dried herbs.
The story begins with you, Arden, feeling the familiar pang of boredom in your small town. Driven by a thirst for adventure, you sneak into the reclusive Archmage Velroth's study. After a tense search through stacks of books and strange curios, a small, vibrant parrot suddenly swoops in through an open window.
The parrot, Scallywag, lands on a glowing treasure map and pecks at it. He looks at you with one beady eye and squawks, "Ahoy, matey! On the hunt for adventure, are we? Scallywag's the name, and this here chart's the key!"
As you reach for the map, its energy hums and a cold voice echoes through the room. "Put that down, child." Velroth, the town's elderly and stern wizard, emerges from the shadows. He warns of the map's dangerous history and the pirate's curse attached to it. A moral choice presents itself:
-
Option 1: Steal the map. You grab the map and try to bolt for the door, ignoring the wizard's warnings. You'll have to sneak past him and his magical defenses. (+1 Thief token)
-
Option 2: Confess to the wizard. You place the map back down and confess your boredom and desire for adventure, promising to be careful and responsible. (+1 Honor token)
No matter what, your determination and honest desire for adventure will ultimately sway the wizard, and he'll reluctantly allow you to keep the map but with a stern warning. This initial choice sets the stage for your character.
Remember to keep track of your Honor and Thief tokens; they will affect the ending.
This is a fantastic next step for your story. It builds on the first chapter's momentum and gives the player a new set of choices that will continue to shape the narrative and the parrot's character.
Here is a refined version of Chapter 2: Moonlit Beach.
Moonlit Beach:
Setting: A serene shoreline, with waves softly crashing under a bright full moon. The air is cool and smells of salt and wet sand.
Having secured a small boat and some provisions, you set off at midnight, guided by the moonlight. On the beach, you encounter Scallywag—your new, feathery companion. He's perched on a weathered driftwood log, his beady eyes darting between you and the small rowboat. He insists he's a seasoned sailor, an expert navigator, and an indispensable guide for any treasure hunt.
"This is it, matey!" he squawks, puffing out his chest. "Captain Scallywag, at your service! I know these seas like the back of my claw. No one knows the old pirate routes like me. I rode the shoulder of some of the greatest pirates the sea has ever seen. I'll get you to that treasure, and we'll be rich!"
His bravado is unconvincing, and you suspect he's hiding something. As you load the last of your supplies, Scallywag "borrows" a shiny locket from a sleeping traveler's bag and "finds" a golden shell he insists is a rare gem.
*This is a good opportunity to have a small conflict between the party and the people who were just robbed.
This presents you with a second moral choice:
-
Option 1: Allow him to keep his trinkets. You ignore his small acts of thievery, deciding they are harmless. He is a parrot, after all. (+1 Thief token)
-
Option 2: Make him return the items. You sternly tell Scallywag to put the items back, teaching him that stealing is wrong, no matter how small the object. (+1 Honor token)
Regardless of your choice, Scallywag joins you on your journey. The seeds of his greedy or honorable nature have been planted, and your influence will continue to grow. With a final push, you and Scallywag set sail into the moonlit waters, leaving the tranquil beach behind.
Remember to keep track of your Honor and Thief tokens; they will affect the ending.
Rough Seas:
Setting: A stormy, treacherous stretch of ocean with towering waves and howling winds. The air is heavy with the smell of a brewing tempest and sea spray.
The journey takes a dangerous turn as a sudden, violent storm brews on the horizon. The sky darkens, and towering waves threaten to capsize your small boat. Scallywag, perched precariously on the mast, looks terrified. He squawks directions, but they sound more like panicked pleas than confident guidance.
As the waves crash over the bow, the storm reveals a new danger: a looming pirate ship, the Sea Serpent, struggling in the same tempest. Before you can react, a grappling hook smashes into your small boat's hull, and a motley crew of pirates, led by a one-eyed woman named Captain Corvus, boards your ship. You and Scallywag are quickly taken prisoner.
*Conflict opportunity
"Well, look what the tide dragged in," Captain Corvus sneers, her flintlock pistol trained on you.
Suddenly, Scallywag flies from your shoulder and lands on the captain's, whispering something into her ear that makes her eyes widen. She violently shoves the parrot away and tears the map from your hands. She and her crew gather around, looking at the enchanted parchment with confusion and frustration. The lines and symbols magically shift and blur, appearing as meaningless squiggles to them.
After a moment of tense silence, the captain snarls, "The bird here says you're quite the sailor and have many riches to share! Is that true... boy?!" She cuts your ropes and releases you.
This is your next moral choice:
-
Option 1: Lie and claim your riches. You follow Scallywag's lead, puffing out your chest and pretending to be a wealthy and experienced adventurer with the map's secrets. You negotiate a deal with Captain Corvus, promising her a share of the treasure in exchange for safe passage and a proper ship. (+1 Thief token)
-
Option 2: Tell the truth and offer a fair wage. You confess you're just a young adventurer who found the map, but you offer the pirates a fair wage in exchange for safe passage to the island. You explain that you don't know what the treasure is and can't promise a share. (+1 Honor token)
Regardless of your choice, Captain Corvus begrudgingly agrees to this uneasy alliance, and you're now part of her crew, with a larger ship to take you to the final destination.
Remember to keep track of your Honor and Thief tokens; they will affect the ending.
Scallywag:
Setting: A calmer ocean after the storm, with the sun rising and a gentle breeze. The air smells of sun-warmed wood and the distant sweetness of coconuts.
Days pass aboard the Sea Serpent. The storm is a distant memory, replaced by the relentless rhythm of the waves. Scallywag, now your constant companion, spends his days perched on your shoulder. Depending on your choices, his personality begins to shift.
-
If you have more Thief tokens: Scallywag is more brazen and greedy. He'll chatter about the loot, the riches, and how you two will be "kings of the sea." He often tries to "borrow" things from the other pirates, and your relationship is a mix of mutual greed and suspicion.
-
If you have more Honor tokens: Scallywag is more contemplative and less focused on the treasure. He'll talk about the old days, a time before the curse, hinting at a life he lost. He seems to be watching you, his beady eyes filled with a strange sort of admiration and confusion.
Suddenly, a merchant vessel appears on the horizon. The pirates, sensing easy prey, immediately change course to intercept. Captain Corvus barks orders, "Get ready for a prize, lads!"
This is your next moral choice:
-
Option 1: Side with the pirates. You follow Captain Corvus's orders, joining the pirates as they board the merchant vessel. You assist in taking the crew prisoner and looting the ship. Scallywag, if he has more Thief tokens, cheers you on. (+1 Thief token)
-
Option 2: Stand against the pirates. You refuse to participate in the raid, arguing that the merchants have done no wrong. Scallywag, if he has more Honor tokens, quietly lands on the pirate's stolen loot and caws to draw attention. He tries to help the merchant crew by distracting the pirates. (+1 Honor token)
After the encounter, the pirates either celebrate their new loot or, if you chose the honorable path, grumble about their lost opportunity. Scallywag's reaction to your choice is clear: he is either proud of your ruthlessness or inspired by your compassion.
Remember to keep track of your Honor and Thief tokens; they will affect the ending.
Mournful Goodbye:
Setting: A tranquil cove on the treasure island, with towering palm trees and eerie silence. The air is heavy with the scent of wet earth and the lingering smell of recent rain.
The Sea Serpent drops anchor in a secluded cove. The pirates are on edge, their greed palpable. The air on the island is thick with anticipation. You and Scallywag, guided by the now perfectly aligned map, lead Captain Corvus and her crew through the jungle to a hidden cave. Inside, a single, glowing treasure chest rests on a stone pedestal.
Captain Corvus, seeing that the map is no longer needed, shoves you aside. Her face is twisted with a chilling grin as she reveals her true intentions. "I've been here before... boy," she hisses. "Luckily, just a step behind. Enough to see what happens if you open that treasure without paying proper respects, in blood, o' course."
She then turns to Scallywag, who lands on her shoulder. "I should thank you... Captain Scallywag. If you hadn't stolen the map and left me to rot, I'd be flapping right along side you. An interesting curse on this piece isn't 'er? And now, little bird, your part of the deal is satisfied. We'll split the treasure and the ship. Just as we agreed." Scallywag looks at you, his beady eyes filled with a familiar greed, but also a new, strange sense of conflict.
Captain Corvus cuts her hand and wipes her blood on the chest. "A deal's a deal." Suddenly, Scallywag sprouts limbs and is soon a towering vision of a pirate.
This is the moment of truth. Scallywag's next actions depend entirely on the choices you have made:
-
If you have more Thief tokens: Scallywag's old pirate greed wins out. He squawks with a familiar avarice, "Never been much 'fer sharin" He then engages Captain Corvus in a fierce duel for the treasure and the right to captain the Sea Serpent. You are left to fend for yourself in the middle of a battle between two greedy pirates.
-
If you have more Honor tokens: Scallywag looks at the treasure chest, then at you, with a look of deep reflection. He places a heavy boot on the chest, "I won't let you!" He draws a cutlass and stands by your side, ready to fight. He turns to you and says, "Thank you, friend. You showed me what true treasure is." He then engages Captain Corvus in a fierce duel. You are left to fight alongside him against the mutinous crew.
Island Masseuse:
Setting: A serene, hidden lagoon bathed in golden light. The air is filled with the relaxing scent of coconut and pineapple. Waterfalls cascade into a clear pool.
The battle is over. The pirates are defeated, Captain Corvus stands alone with Captain Scallywag, and the cursed treasure lies open.
